URBANA — A former student who suspected an administrator of having a gun in his pocket during an after-hours visit to Urbana High School on Thursday was later taken into custody for resisting arrest, police said.

Malique Hyde, 24, was taken to the Champaign County Satellite Jail where he faces charges of aggravated resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to authorities, Hyde came to his alma mater shortly after he was fired on Thursday and requested to be allowed to visit the main office to order transcripts.

Although he was initially allowed to continue, managers later spotted him in other areas of the building, where he “made various statements regarding his presence,” police said.

As he was being led toward the exit by managers, someone reported seeing what appeared to be a gun in Hyde’s pocket. After the manager left the building, he contacted Urbana police.

About 20 minutes later, Urbana police found Hyde on the bike near the intersection of Kinch Street and Rainbowview Drive. UPD alleged that when confronted by officers, Hyde “physically resisted their efforts to detain him.”

During the interaction, an officer sustained a wrist injury that required medical treatment.

No weapons were found during the investigation nor was it confirmed that Hyde was at the school. When he entered UHS, the metal detectors were turned off, as is customary after school hours, according to the district.

Police are asking anyone with information or video footage of the incident to contact them at 217-384-2320.
