A Hunt County woman died after a man allegedly ran her over with a car during an argument

HUNT COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – A Hunt County man is charged with murder after allegedly running over his partner with a car, according to a newly released arrest warrant.

Phillip Shane Cromwell, 48, of Waco Bay, was arrested Nov. 7 in connection with the death of 50-year-old Angela Yvonne Lewis.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office first received the call just after 11 p.m. on Nov. 6. The caller reported that he was on his way to the hospital with Lewis, who was injured after being hit by another car.

The woman said Cromwell, who was in a relationship with Lewis, came to her and her boyfriend’s home in Wills Point and asked for help getting Lewis to the hospital.

Lewis later died from his injuries, including two broken hips.

Cromwell and the woman’s boyfriend arrived at the hospital around 1:30 a.m., two hours after Lewis’ arrival.

In an interview at the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, the woman’s boyfriend said Cromwell told him the incident occurred while Cromwell was trying to start his car. He said the car was in poor condition, its radiator was exposed and could only be started by “warming up” the engine. He said Cromwell ran over Lewis, who was standing in front of the vehicle, as he tried to ‘start’ him.

But in a separate interview, Cromwell told officers Lewis leaned in front of the car and tried to start it when the vehicle hit him. This does not appear to be consistent with Lewis’ injuries, the affidavit states.

The morning after the incident, a Van Zandt County police officer was securing the scene when he was approached by two men. One person claimed to be a witness and said that he watched the incident from the security camera of a nearby caravan. The affidavit states Cromwell said he saw Lewis ‘beat up’ from the driver’s side of a car that had no hood. Lewis then said he was standing near the passenger door when Cromwell put the car in reverse and ran over him, according to testimony. He then went out, put Lewis in the car and drove away.

The woman’s boyfriend said he and Cromwell returned to the scene of the crime in the Rolling Oaks area of rural Van Zandt County after the woman went to the hospital.

There, she said, they found her bag and dropped her off at the house Lewis and Cromwell shared. He said Cromwell also took time to shower, change his clothes and feed the dog. He said they also stopped to look for Cromwell’s phone, which he said he lost outside Waco Bay. He couldn’t explain why those errands were more important than going to the hospital at the time, the affidavit states.

Cromwell is charged with murder and remains in the Van Zandt County Jail on $500,000 bail.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office at 903-567-4133.
