Fingerprints from decades-old taxicab enforcement led to the arrest of a Florida man in an unsolved 1978 double murder case

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WWSB) – Nearly 46 years after a young couple was found shot to death at a Massachusetts resort, investigators say they now believe they know who is responsible.

Police arrested Timothy Joley, 71, at his home in Clearwater on Oct. 30, 2024, in connection with the 1978 murders of 18-year-old Theresa Marcoux and 20-year-old Mark Harnish.

According to Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni, around 9:30 a.m. on November 19, 1978, a police officer on patrol found a Dodge pickup truck parked at a roadside rest area. Blood was observed in and around the vehicle.

He later found the remains of Marcoux and Harnish just above a nearby parapet; Both victims appeared to have gunshot wounds.

Autopsies later determined that the cause of death for each was multiple gunshot wounds.

When investigators examined the truck, they found a blood-like fingerprint on the passenger-side window that did not belong to Marcoux or Harnish. The print was entered into the Massachusetts Automated Fingerprint Identification System and was also manually compared to approximately 70,000 known fingerprint cards, but no identification was made.

A tipster reportedly gave investigators the name of Timothy Joley and information about his role in the deaths of Marcoux and Harnish.

Two law enforcement investigators were able to match Joley’s left fingerprint to the fingerprint found on the bloody window.

Investigators also learned that Joley, 71, became a licensed gun owner in November 1978 and purchased a handgun about a month before the murders.

Joley is currently being held without bail in the Pinellas County Jail and will be extradited back to Massachusetts to face charges.
