The union announced on Saturday that backup goalkeeper Holden Trent had died suddenly at the age of 25.

No cause of death was stated.

Mr Trent’s family on Thursday Announced on Instagram page It was stated that he was taken to the intensive care unit of a hospital, without giving further details.

“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent,” the team said in a statement. “Although he was a great player and a fierce competitor, more importantly he was a devoted son, brother, fiancée and teammate who made those around him better. He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance and will be greatly missed. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, fiancée and friends.”

Mr Trent’s family said on Saturday: “We would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by family and friends. Details regarding services and celebrations of life will follow soon. “Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden.”

The union stated that “out of respect for Holden’s friends and family, no further statement will be made at this time” and asked that the family’s “privacy be respected while they are suffering.”
