Trump’s meeting with Biden was highly anticipated – but the selection of Matt Gaetz as attorney general was the big bombshell of the day | US News

It was a highly anticipated moment at the White House on Wednesday: the beginning of the transfer of power between two bitter enemies.

It was a moment of history, a moment of symbolism. It could fuel pain and joy, but there was no sign of either.

But it wasn’t the highlight of the day. This came later.

For the second night in a row, remarkable names emerged for the people Donald Trump wants in the White House.

Following the news Tuesday night that Fox News host and former National Guard Major Pete Hegseth had been picked by Mr. Trump. be the next secretary of defenseAnother Trump bombshell arrived Wednesday night, sending the establishment’s eyebrows beyond orbit.

‘Gonzo agent of chaos’

Firebrand, ultra-Maga stalwart Matt Gaetz has been announced as Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, the nation’s top law enforcement official.

This was completely unexpected and threw Washington into an evening of turmoil.

Senior Democratic senator Chris Murphy called the announcement a “red alert moment for our democracy.”

Rep. Jim Himes, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, told CNN that the attorney general’s role “…requires caution, common sense, deep respect for the rule of law.” Matt Gaetz is the opposite of all of these. he is the gonzo agent of chaos”.

Gaetz, 42, has faced numerous allegations of misconduct, including a federal sex trafficking investigation that ended without him being charged.

A related House ethics investigation is ongoing, but would be dismissed if he leaves Congress because he has jurisdiction only in that forum.

He has never worked as a prosecutor and has only practiced law for a few years at the local level.

His nomination requires approval by Congress. Even with a Republican majority in both chambers, Gaetz could be in a difficult situation. He is unpopular with more traditional Republican politicians.

For Donald Trump, this pick reflects exactly the vision he has outlined for the Justice Department, a department that would carry out his orders without any sense of independence or objectivity.

This is a deliberately provocative choice by a proud provocateur. T-shirt brand and product of American democracy.

White House pass

Earlier in the day, Donald Trump’s private jet touched down at Joint Base Andrews on the edge of Washington, DC. Cameras caught him walking past presidential jets parked on the tarmac—planes that would soon be flying him again.

The president-elect’s staff was framing this flight to Washington as a triumphant return. On social media, a senior adviser set footage of the landing to the sound of Kanye West’s Homecoming.

For the comeback president, it was a return to the future.

I’d give more than a dime for the man’s inner thoughts as he descended the steps of “Trump Force One.”

Of course, this moment for him was a nice two-finger-up for many who said they would never do it; that you could never do.

But he did. Four years ago he was a complete flush in the eyes of the Washington establishment; A responsibility for those exiled to Mar-a-Lago. He had lost the White House and his party had failed to win both houses of Congress.

Four years later, he won back the White House by capturing every single one of America’s swing states, and his party won both houses of Congress in a clean victory. And he did this despite lawsuits and warnings that he was a threat to the nation’s democracy.

Love him or hate him, admire him or fear him, his return to the White House on Wednesday to begin his transition to become America’s 47th president is a stunning political transformation.

The world’s cameras were there, anticipating this moment of transition, this moment in history.

The incoming president was a few minutes late for his appointment with the outgoing president. They met in the Oval Office In front of a roaring fire that was definitely warmer than the atmosphere in the room.

Handshake and courtesy

Trump returns to the White House

If Donald Trump was cheerful, he didn’t show it. While Joe Biden was tough, he didn’t show it.

Two men with such different visions shook hands. The two men, who had said such cruel things to each other for years, were now smiling and chatting pleasantly.

Joe Biden has called Donald Trump “a danger to democracy” many times. The process of democracy now required this moment: handshake and courtesy.

President Biden certainly wanted to give Donald Trump what he never offered four years ago: concession and transition from defeat.

Remember, there was no Oval Office moment in 2020. Instead, Donald Trump was denying that he lost the election.
