Explosives and a timer were found on the suspect’s body after the attack on the Supreme Court in Brazil

A man committed suicide by detonating explosives after trying to enter Brazil’s Supreme Court, authorities said Wednesday, in an attack on the country’s political heart that led to the evacuation of court staff and lawmakers in the capital Brasilia.

Officers found explosives and a timer strapped to the man’s body and are conducting an X-ray evaluation to determine whether he may be in further danger from possible explosives in his belt, a military police spokesman said.

“If there are explosives, we will decide whether to cut the tape, whether there is a risk of a new explosion or whether we need to take other measures to neutralize the explosives,” Major Raphael van der Broocke told reporters.

Three Powers Plaza, home to all three branches of the Brazilian government, was closed following two explosions on Wednesday evening. The police launched a search and investigation in the area.

The first explosion occurred in a car at 19:30 local time, Deputy Governor of the Federal District Celina Leão told reporters late on Wednesday. CNN affiliate CNN Brasil had previously reported that the explosion occurred in an alley next to Annex 4 of the Congress building.

Leão added that the suspect then tried to enter the Supreme Court building but failed and a second explosion occurred outside the door. It was stated that there were no other victims in the attack.

The deputy governor said police are investigating the incident as a suicide attack as there were no other suspects or people involved.

Leão said one of the ongoing investigations was that this was a “lone wolf” attack.

Leão said a car found at the scene belonged to the person authorities believe was the attacker.

Broocke, the military police spokesman, said police also found a backpack nearby that may contain explosives, and more explosives were found near a traffic cone in the area. Previously, CNN Brazil reported that an eyewitness saw a man with a backpack near the Supreme Court.

CNN Brazil said that court judges and Congress were evacuated after the explosions.

The incident took place five days before Brazil prepares to host global leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies in Rio de Janeiro. Chinese leader Xi Jinping is scheduled to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on a state visit to Brasilia on November 20, and US President Joe Biden will visit the Amazon rainforest on Sunday before joining the G20.

Attorney General Jorge Messias condemned the attack, saying federal police will “thoroughly and urgently investigate the explosions that occurred around Three Powers Plaza.”

“I strongly condemn the attacks on the Federal Supreme Court and the House of Representatives. “I express my solidarity with the ministers and MPs,” he told X. “We need to understand the motivation behind these attacks and at the same time restore peace and security as soon as possible.”

Government-run news agency Agencia Brasil and CNN Brasil reported that the suspected attacker was from southern Brazil and had previously run for local office under former President Jair Bolsonaro’s right-wing party.

CNN cannot independently verify the reports, and authorities in Brazil have not identified the suspect. Leão said that “an investigation is being conducted regarding the person’s identity” but that no further information will be released until the body is examined.

Three Powers Plaza was the scene of mass protests and attacks on January 8, 2023, when Bolsonaro supporters stormed the Supreme Court, Congress, and presidential offices.

Discontent is growing against the court, which has expanded its jurisdiction over cases involving political extremism, disinformation and threats to the democratic order.

Although some saw this as necessary to preserve Brazil’s democracy, critics called it judicial overreach aimed at silencing conservative voices.

Supreme Court in August issued a restraining order Social media site X has been suspended nationwide after billionaire CEO Elon Musk refused to elect legal representation in the country. The order escalated a months-long fight over freedom of expression and Bolsonaro supporters are angry. In October, the court allowed the platform to continue operating in order to comply with the court order.
