Texas women’s basketball beats Lamar: Game recap, highlights

Final: Texas 95, Lamar 58

Facing two early deficits, Texas cruised to a mostly 37-point victory over the visiting Cardinals. Senior guard Shay Holle paced the UT offense with 15 points, while freshmen Jordan Lee and Justice Carlton combined for 27 points. On defense, Texas committed 28 turnovers against a Lamar team that shot 52.5%.

Texas (2-0) will travel to face DePaul (2-1) on Sunday night.

4th (6:37): Texas 84, Lamar 45

Breathe easy, Texas fans. With 7:22 left, Texas guard Rori Harmon re-entered the game. Harmon suffered an apparent leg injury in the third quarter.

Harmon has eight points and eight assists tonight.

Last 3: Texas 75, Lamar 39

Texas senior Shay Holle leads all scorers with 15 points, but what about the freshmen? Jordan Lee and Justice Carlton, the No. 9 and 12 recruits in the Class of 2024, scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for UT. Lee hit two 3-pointers tonight and Carlton finished the third quarter with a nice 3-point play.

Rori Harmon did not return to the game due to a leg injury at the beginning of the third quarter. The Longhorns’ star point guard was seen wandering around the Texas bench and congratulating his teammates after the end of the third quarter.

3rd (3:38): Texas 66, Lamar 30

Two minutes into the second half, Texas senior Rori Harmon limped off the floor after trying to defend R’Mani Taylor as the Lamar guard made a move toward the basket. After reaching the bench, Harmon left the field with the team coach. Harmon was kidnapped Knee injury sidelined him for most of the 2023-24 season.

Harmon returned to the Texas bench at the end of the third quarter media timeout, but did not re-enter the game.

First Half: Texas 51, Lamar 14

Texas will not face its first challenge of the season tonight. Three days after defeating Southeast Missouri State by 72 points in the opener, UT picks another mid-major program.

All 10 Longhorns who played in the first half scored at least one point, with Shay Holle’s 10 points leading all players. Texas point guard Rori Harmon had eight points, seven assists and four steals.

2nd (6:13): Texas 34, Lamar 11

Texas has played nearly 54 minutes of basketball this season but only made one Longhorn three-pointer. Senior Shay Holle hit two deep shots tonight. Holle also made UT’s two three-pointers in the opening game.

As a team, Texas is 2-for-7 in 3-point attempts tonight.

End 1: Texas 24, Lamar 7

Senior Rori Harmon surpassed Lamar’s point total in the first 10 minutes, and Shay Holle matched her. Behind those 15 combined points, UT has complete control of the Moody Center.

Neither Cardinal scored more than two points in the first quarter.

1st (4:30): Texas 14, Lamar 4

Lamar took an early lead of two on Wednesday, but Texas took control of the scoreboard. All Texas starters scored at least once. The Longhorns also forced seven turnovers on defense.

Madison Booker facing knee injury

A team spokesperson confirmed that sophomore forward Madison Booker will miss tonight’s game. He is thought to be day-to-day with a hamstring injury.

All-American and SEC preseason player of the year as a freshman, Booker played 25 minutes in UT’s season opener on Sunday. He contributed with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists.

Laila Phelia will make her Texas debut

Senior guard Leila Phelia played in UT’s season opener against SEMO last Sunday with an undisclosed injury. Phelia, who transferred from Michigan, is expected to return for the Lamar game, but he is not in Texas’ starting lineup. The Longhorns will instead start seniors Rori Harmon, Shay Holle, Aaliyah Moore and Taylor Jones, along with freshman guard Jordan Lee.

Phelia was Michigan’s leading scorer last season, averaging 16.8 points per game. He earned all-conference honors in the Big Ten in 2023 and 2024.
