Fulton County deputy and wife arrested after shootout with police at South Fulton bar

Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryon Thomas and his wife were arrested early Monday after an argument at Harold’s Ice Bar on Old National Highway turned into a shootout involving officers and several law enforcement personnel and others.

At approximately 2:37 a.m. on Nov. 11, South Fulton Police officers were called while responding to reports of a disturbance at the bar. According to arrest warrants obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, officers found Thomas and several others fighting at the business. As officers attempted to disperse the crowd, Thomas allegedly refused repeated verbal commands to leave the area.

A police officer who tried to break up the argument reported that Thomas pushed him. The incident escalated when Thomas became argumentative and disobedient, officers said in the police report.

A corporal observed Hardy grab Thomas’ arm as he attempted to arrest another person, according to testimony. Officers had to use physical force to restrain Thomas, who continued to resist. Officers reported that Thomas had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath at the time of the incident, raising the charge that he was public intoxicated.

Many police officers who came to the scene during the incident were also injured. During the argument, one’s lip was swollen and the other’s hand was injured; Both injuries were documented with body camera footage.

Thomas’ wife, Antoinette Thomas, reportedly tried to intervene by preventing officers from arresting her husband. According to the report, Antoinette grabbed the officers’ arms during the scuffle and suffered a minor injury to her lip while the officers restrained her. He was also arrested and charged with simple battery and obstruction.

Thomas stated to officers that he was trying to intervene in a dispute involving his nephew when the incident escalated. Following the argument, Thomas allegedly asked officers to reconsider the charges due to his position as a deputy sheriff, but was taken into custody anyway. Both Bryon and Antoinette Thomas were transported to Southern Regional Hospital for medical evaluation before being booked at the South Fulton location.

Deputy Thomas was off duty at the time of the incident.
