“You’re in a public position, you were put in that position, and most of us were elected into that position. You’re here for the voters, you’re here for the community, you can’t hide behind a door.” KUSD Board Member Sabrina Landry said:

This happened less than a week after a 13-year-old boy walked into an elementary school with an airsoft gun that resembled an automatic rifle.

On Tuesday night, TMJ4 learned board members want a referendum on the February ballotThis will include additional security measures for the school.

“Not only have you failed hundreds of children in the community, but this is a safety issue,” parent Kristina Delgado said at the meeting.

“I just want to see increased security like our schools,” student Addison McBride said.

Board members said the safety increases were included in a $19 million referendum to be voted on this winter.

“I think it’s a positive thing, but it’s also up to the community and the parents to vote for this referendum,” Lawton added.

Landry explained where the money would go.

“The secretaries will be provided with newer security cameras and extra-large screens so they can actually see who is at the door,” Landry explained.

Landry said she received a text message about security upgrades just minutes before speaking to him.

“For the seven schools that do not have controlled entrances, we will use the remainder of the e-cigarette settlement money to pay for a staff member to accompany them at the door,” he said.

“And who was that a text message from,” reporter Jenna Rae asked.

“From Inspector Dr. Weiss,” Landry replied.

“On your personal phone,” Rae asked.

“On my personal phone,” Landry said.

“But you have a work phone,” Rae asked.

“I have a work phone,” Landry replied.

TMJ4 emailed and called Weiss’ communications director on Wednesday. Since we could not get any response, we went to the district center ourselves.

“He will not be available for an interview. We will send you an updated report,” Tanya Ruder said.

Ruder is KUSD’s director of communications. He was speaking to TMJ4 News only via the district’s intercom and was asking our team to leave public property.

“School board members have called us, parents have called us and they are asking for transparency from the district, and we are wondering why Dr. Weiss is refusing to interview us on camera,” Rae said.

“We will be providing you with an updated version today with some updated information,” Ruder responded.

We did not receive an updated statement from the district on Wednesday.

“Get off your ass and answer some emails and reassure these people that you’re involved, you’re doing your job,” Landry told Rae.

“You don’t need to just push people away or push them out. It makes you look problematic. There’s always something that can be said to the public to reassure them,” Landry continued.

Rae asked, “Do you mean on camera or via written statement?” he asked.

“On camera,” Landry replied.
