Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity suspended after sexual assault allegation

Cornell University has suspended a long-standing fraternity following a report that a man was drugged and sexually assaulted by several men during an off-campus party.

Michael Azarian, the fraternity’s executive director, told local media that Chi Phi’s national organization had temporarily suspended its chapter due to the police investigation, adding that the fraternity “will fully cooperate with law enforcement and university officials at this time.”

“Our community is trying to process last Friday’s crime alert, which included a deeply disturbing report of drug and sexual violence,” said Ryan Lombardi, Cornell vice president for student and campus life. In his message to students, he said:

“We strongly condemn the actions of those responsible for such crimes and will hold anyone identified fully accountable. If you have information that could assist this investigation, we ask that you contact the authorities.”
