Lansing inmate pleads guilty to damaging prison property during riot

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (KCTV) – A Lansing inmate admitted Wednesday to property damage after being involved in a riot in 2020.

The Leavenworth County District Attorney’s Office announced Nov. 13 that Hakeem W. Malik, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of criminal damage.

The charge stemmed from the April 9, 2020, riot in which inmates at Lansing Correctional Facility took control of life support for approximately eight hours. They destroyed windows, computers and other equipment, causing approximately $30,000 in damage.

Malik pleaded guilty and acknowledged his role in the property damage. Security footage of the riot shows him carrying a chain with a lock on it.

Malik’s sentencing is scheduled for December 13, 2024. It is unclear what additional penalties he may face.
