GARY, Ind. (WISH) — A suspect who attacked an officer during an undercover investigation at the Gary Police Department was shot and killed, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the fatal shooting, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement late Wednesday afternoon. The warning stated that the suspect was male, but his age or identity was not specified. The names of the police officers involved in the incident were not mentioned in the report.

The warning did not say anyone else was injured.

The shooting happened around noon Wednesday in the 3400 block of Maryland Avenue. It’s in a residential area about a mile west of the I-65 and I-94 interchange in northwestern Indiana.

The man who was shot was taken to the hospital and died.

“No further details will be released from our agency at this time,” said the alert sent via the sheriff’s app at 5:22 pm on Wednesday.
