House destroyed, 2 more people damaged in fire in Marshfield – Boston News, Weather, Sports

MARSHFIELD, MASS. (WHDH) – A house fire broke out in Marshfield Wednesday morning.

SKY7-HD was over the scene as smoke billowed into the sky over Sheridan Drive in the Rexham Beach section of Marshfield.

While the 70-year-old two-storey house became unusable in the fire, two adjacent houses were also damaged in the fire.

“Seriously, everyone in the neighborhood thought the whole neighborhood was going to rise up. It was that bad, that serious. It’s like, what’s going to happen next?” said neighbor George Haldoupis.

A relative of the family living in the burned house said that four generations lived in the house, from a 5-year-old boy to a 92-year-old great-grandmother.

The 92-year-old woman had been taken to visit the local senior center just minutes before the fire was detected. There was no one at home as the fire spread.

Marshfield fire officials said high winds hindered firefighting efforts.

“It was like a blowtorch. This went from one direction to the other. “And once he caught the fire, he quickly accelerated it,” said Marshfield Fire Marshal Acting Chief Michael Laselva.

While Massachusetts is under a red flag warning due to the current drought, a third alert has been issued due to wind. But that wasn’t the only problem firefighters faced when they arrived and started work.

“They were able to tear it down pretty quickly. We had some issues with water supply in this neighborhood, but with all the help we called in early we got over that quickly,” Laselva said.

There are indications that the fire started in the sunroom at the back of the house.
