Proposed housing project in Clermont County raises concerns among residents

CLERMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) – A proposed housing project in Clermont County is raising some concerns among area residents.

The Batavia County Zoning Commission will review plans to build more than 200 homes on 117 acres along State Route 222.

said Taylor Corbett, planning manager for Batavia Township.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in properties that are normally more rural.”

Batavia County is at the center of the recent development boom in Clermont County, he noted. MI Homes is proposing to build 267 new homes, a plan currently being considered by the county’s zoning commission. Betty Howell, who has lived near the development site for 40 years, expressed concerns about the potential increase in traffic.

“This road is dangerous and cannot handle increased traffic,” Howell said.

The Howells, who have lived on their farm since Betty’s childhood, are particularly concerned about the dangerous curve on State Route 222.

“If there’s a tractor trailer coming the other way, they’ll be in your lane when you come around the corner,” Dale Howell said.

Corbett acknowledged the issue, noting that the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been aware of problems at the corner for several years.

“We know the corner needs to be improved in the near future,” Corbett said.

He added that the county will likely request a traffic impact study from the contractor.

The Batavia County Zoning Commission is scheduled to meet Thursday to discuss the proposal and make recommendations to the county board of trustees. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Batavia County Community Center.
