14-year-old arrested in connection with vehicle theft in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — On Monday, Cleveland police arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with dozens of recent crimes, including several recent car thefts.

While investigating an alleged aggravated robbery involving the boy on Oct. 31, detectives found him in a recently stolen vehicle. When police tried to stop the vehicle, the driver refused and led officers on a pursuit, police said.

The vehicle was later found unoccupied in a parking lot on Kenmore Avenue, and police believed the occupants had broken into a nearby home. After obtaining permission to enter the home, detectives located the 14-year-old boy, as well as a 13-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy, police said.

Police said the three were detained and two firearms were seized at the scene.

Police said the 14-year-old boy was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon, obstruction, escape and eluding.

News 5 spoke with Cleveland police public information officer Freddy Diaz on Wednesday about the arrests:

The teenager is allegedly linked to numerous recent crimes in the city, including stolen vehicles and other car thefts and robberies. Police said the man had been arrested several times in the past for similar crimes, all of which were being investigated and charges were forthcoming.

Cleveland Mayor Justin said, “The massive devastation this individual is believed to have caused to our community is beyond alarming and even more frustrating considering how many second chances he was given. He chose to continue his crime rather than take advantage of those opportunities.” “Citizens are fed up, businesses are fed up, and I believe it’s time for him to be held fully accountable for his crimes, and I hope the court system does as well,” Bibb said in a statement.

The 13-year-old boy was previously wanted on an arrest warrant for intentional assault. But police said he was arrested for obstruction, failure to comply and weapons violations in connection with the Nov. 11 incident.

The 17-year-old was arrested on a charge of aggravated robbery in connection with the Oct. 31 incident, police said.

The 14-year-old is also believed to be connected to at least 19 vehicle burglaries at Cleveland State University early Sunday morning.

Cleveland police are asking community members who have video footage of carjackings between Downtown East and East 55th Street between Oct. 1 and Nov. 12 to send them to [email protected]. Police said the 14-year-old boy is also believed to be responsible for other incidents.

“I continually say that the men and women of the Cleveland Police Department work extremely hard to investigate crimes and make these wonderful arrests time and time again,” Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said in a statement. “It is disturbing to see children brave enough to continue committing these violent crimes. “I hope these arrests will bring about a visible change in their behavior and bring a sense of peace to our society that is deeply affected by these crimes.”
