Austin chefs react to awards at 2024 Michelin Star ceremony

The Michelin Guide shook up the Texas culinary world with its first ceremony in the state on Monday. Austin chefs reacted to the highly anticipated awards on social media. Here’s what they had to say.

Edgar Rico wins 2024 Michelin Guide Texas Young Chef Award

Chef Edgar Rico was awarded the 2024 Michelin Guide Texas Young Chef Award. The award recognizes rising stars of the culinary world and highlights their potential to shape the future of gastronomy. Rico is the chef of Nixta Taqueria, which was awarded the Bib Gourmand award at the ceremony.

Author Rodrigo Bravo congratulated Rico in a joint Instagram post: “As always, representing pa’ gente and showing people that immigrants make our food and make it taste great.”

When asked at the ceremony what gives him purpose and pride in his work, Chef Rico said, “Cooking delicious food every day and representing Mexican culture. Immigrants are what make this country and this state a great place.”

East Side Taqueria featured in our 2024 Food Guide. It was one of three restaurants that ranked first among 33 restaurants.

This Extraterrestrial BBQ wins the Michelin award

Interstellar came and went with its extraterrestrial barbecue. One of three barbecue restaurants to earn one star from the Michelin guide.

“Honestly, speechless. We’ll be drinking bourbon tonight and tomorrow I’ll have a team of amazing people to thank,” chef John Bates wrote in an Instagram post.

“New school” barbecue partners LeRoy and Lewis received one of three stars awarded to Austin barbecue establishments.

The BBQ restaurant gave a shout-out to other restaurants in an Instagram post: “Congratulations to everyone recognized, especially our ATX restaurant friends and BBQ partners!!! We are so lucky to be part of such an amazing community!

Late chef LeAnn Mueller’s legacy lives on with a Michelin star

La Barbecue, a barbecue restaurant in East Austin, has received one star from the Michelin Guide. The restaurant continues the legacy of the late LeAnn Mueller with its crust and seasoning.

Mueller’s widow, Ali Clem, now runs the restaurant. He expressed his surprise in his post on his Instagram account: “!!!!! Without talking!!”

A green thumbs up: Dai Due recognized by Michelin

Dai Due was one of only two restaurants in Texas to receive a Michelin Green Star. The award highlights restaurants’ ethical and environmental practices.

“I am so happy to be a part of this team,” Dai Due pastry chef Tiffany DeJesus wrote in an Instagram story post. He was photographed holding the green trophy on the Michelin red carpet.

The restaurant ranked #6 in our 2024 Dining Guide.

Green Star for Emmer & Rye’s sustainable efforts

Emmer & Rye is the second restaurant in Texas to receive a Green Star. Located in its 9-year-old home on Rainey Street, surrounded by tall skyscrapers, the restaurant embodies the emotion of the award.

Director of Operations Erin Frazier joined the celebration on Instagram stories showing off the Green Star. “@emmerandrye FOR LIFE BAYBEEEEE!!!!!!” he wrote.

Bib Gourmand victory for Kemuri Tatsu-Ya’s fusion cuisine

The team behind Japanese-Texan fusion restaurant Kemuri Tatsu-Ya celebrated receiving the Bib Gourmand. The award is given to restaurants that serve good food at reasonable prices.

“At Kemuri, we set out to create a place where Japanese flavors feel at home alongside Texas traditions,” said chef-founder Tatsu Aikawa. “This honor belongs to our dedicated team who put their heart and soul into every meal, and to our guests who make this journey possible.”

From Netflix to Michelin: KG BBQ’s received Bib Gourmand

The Egyptian version of KG BBQ’s classic barbecue also earned a Bib Gourmand. The food truck gained popularity after Kareem El-Ghayesh competed in Netflix’s barbecue series “Barbecue Showdown.” He became a quarter-finalist in the competition.

“We are making history today… Congratulations to all Texas restaurants. What an honor to be part of the first @michelinguide in the great state of Texas,” the restaurant said in its Instagram post.

Ramen del Barrio’s taste party received Michelin Bib Gourmand

One of the favorites of the Statesman 2023 was also awarded the Bib Gourmand award. Ramen del Barrio became known on the food list after its opening last year.

The restaurant recognized the other winners with an Instagram post: “It was a great time seeing friends, mentors, and chefs from all over. Congratulations to all the other winners tonight, it’s great to be counted among you!”
