The government will decide the duration of the army’s deployment: Army Headquarters

Colonel Intekhab Haider Khan, Staff Colonel, Directorate of Military Operations, Army Headquarters, said it was up to the government to decide how long the army would be deployed at the field level to assist the civil administration.

At a press conference held in Dhaka Cantonment, he made statements regarding the activities of the Army deployed “For Assistance to Civil Power”. To a question, he said it was wrong to say that the Army was deployed to assist in administration for 60 years. days.

He added that the army was deployed as per the government’s decision and it was the government that would determine how long the deployment would be needed.

He also said the military was fully aware of the importance of preventing human rights violations or extrajudicial killings.

“Our senior leadership has given clear instructions that we should not allow extrajudicial killings under any circumstances. We will make every effort to prevent such incidents.”

Colonel Haider also stated that they did everything to prevent such human rights violations from occurring.

While incidents that people have heard about come to light, he said, many cases where such violations were prevented due to the military’s action may not always be visible to the public.

He added that there had been more than 600 cases of labor unrest in the industrial sector alone, and most of them were violent, especially in the early stages.

Besides the military, other law enforcement agencies were also involved, and if they had not intervened in time to calm the workers, the situation could have turned into much more serious incidents.

Answering another question, Colonel Haider said that in some cases they had to take necessary precautions, but there was no incident where the army targeted and beat anyone.

He said that they are constantly monitoring the situation regarding the law and order situation.

Colonel Haider said that they made a comparative analysis using the crime data available to the police, and according to the analysis, the number of crimes decreased compared to before after the army took office or was given the authority to become a judge.

He said that according to recorded data, crime incidents have decreased.

“This means that the situation has not worsened. However, some may say that the situation has not improved according to expectations.” he added and hoped that it would get better in the future.

On September 17, the government gave officers the authority to act as judges for 60 days in a bid to improve law and order.
