Republican senators are meeting privately Wednesday to elect a new majority leader; It’s a major decision that will shape their relationship with President-elect Donald Trump as he begins his second term.

Senators John Thune, John Cornyn and Rick Scott are vying for the role, and each has signaled a willingness to move closer to Trump’s agenda.

While Thune and Cornyn focused on personal outreach in the Senate, Scott campaigned publicly as Trump’s preferred candidate and won the support of key allies. The contest marks a rare competitive race for GOP leadership as Mitch McConnell steps down after decades of influence.

Senators vote by secret ballot and do not have an open primary. All candidates agree on changes that would empower individual senators and move away from McConnell’s centralized leadership style.
