Semi truck stuck in lines, causing poles to topple and damaging homes on Kailua Road

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Repairs are underway after a truck caused a chain reaction mess along Kailua Road on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. in Kailua-bound lanes near Kalanianaole Highway and Adventist Health Fortress hospital.

Hawaiian Telcom said the truck took out lines and six poles between Ulukahiki and Uluoa streets. Both Kailua-bound lanes of Kailua Road were closed for several hours.

Lane closure required overnight for restoration and repairs

The left lane of Kailua Road to the Town of Kailua opened at 4:30 p.m. However, Kailua Road between Ulukahiki and Uluoa streets will be closed starting at 8 p.m. so crews can work on restoration and repair work overnight.

Service to customers in Kailua, Waimanalo and Hawaii Kai may be affected.

Hawaii Telcom said the road will reopen to morning traffic.

‘We are very lucky.’ Neighborhood residents investigated the damage to the house

The incident resulted in a pole falling onto the roof of Rheanna Stancil-Williams’ home. He said he was out for lunch with his family when the incident happened.

“We were actually just coming back from Windward Mall and as we were coming towards Kailua Road we noticed the poles next to the park. “Then we noticed the pole in our house while passing by,” he said.

Stancil-Williams said her roof is now damaged.

“The post is sitting on top of our gutter, and you can see it’s recessed into the roof a little bit,” he said. “A pole that came out of the power pole got stuck in our wall, which helped it crash completely into our roof.

“We didn’t experience the impact while we were at home, so we’re very lucky,” Stancil-Williams said.

The incident is being investigated

The truck belongs to Island Distributing, which is owned by Reyes Beverage Group. Pasha was carrying the container.

Reyes Beverage Group said in a statement:

“We are aware of an incident involving one of our trucks on Oahu earlier today. We are thankful no one was injured and are working closely with local authorities to investigate the matter. We will take appropriate action based on our findings.”
