$42 million compensation paid for mistreatment of Abu Ghraib detainees

A. jury was awarded three awards Iraq Prisoners detained at Abu Ghraib prison $42 million for mistreatment at the hands of US soldiers in the early 2000s.

In the lawsuit filed 16 years ago, it was claimed that Virginia-based CACI, which hires interrogators to the US army, would be held responsible for the sexual abuse and torture suffered by detainees.

CACI signed contracts with the United States in 2003 and 2004.

Although the plaintiff’s lawyers do not allege that the interrogators themselves were abusive, the lawyers allege that the interrogators conspired with military police to “soften” the detainees.

Suhail Al Shimari, Salah Al-Ejaili and Asa’ad Al-Zubae were each awarded $3 million in compensation and $11 million in punitive damages.

“Today is a great day for me and for justice,” Al-Ejaili said in his written statement. “I have been waiting for this day for a long time. This victory is not just a victory for the three plaintiffs in this lawsuit against a company. This victory is a shining light for all those who are oppressed and a strong warning to any company or contractor that practices different forms of torture and harassment.”

Al-Ejaili himself testified that he was deprived of sleep, forced to wear women’s underwear, threatened with dogs and put in stressful positions that caused him to vomit.

This is the second trial of the case after a jury earlier this year was unable to decide whether CACI should be held liable.
