Man arrested for breaking into church and fighting with MP while holding a knife

HOMER, Mich. — A knife-wielding man resisted a sheriff’s deputy’s attempt to arrest him after he allegedly broke into a church Tuesday morning.

Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a location near East Adams Street and South Sophia Street in Homer around 7:24 a.m. on Nov. 12. A caller to 911 reported a man burning leaves on the sidewalk.

The man initially cooperated with deputies before pulling out a knife and pointing it at one of them, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office. After repeated orders to drop the gun, the man did so.

When deputies moved to arrest him, he began fighting them. Firefighters who came to the scene also helped take the person into custody.

Investigators later determined that the 64-year-old from Portage was connected to an early morning burglary at a nearby United Methodist Church.

The man is in prison on charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

Anyone with information about the break-in or the man’s whereabouts prior to this incident is asked to contact Lt. Bacik at the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office by calling (269) 967-3650. Tips can also be submitted anonymously. Silent Observer at (269) 781-9700.
