Biden hosts Israeli president at White House amid peace efforts

LONDON — President Joe Biden hosted IsraelThe outgoing administration wants progress on ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon before President-elect Donald Trump takes power in January, President Isaac Herzog said at the White House on Tuesday.

“I know you’re working hard to make sure this war ends,” Herzog told Biden when they met in the Oval Office. “And security will be ensured above all else for the Lebanese people as well as for the Israeli people.”

“Obviously, you’re also thinking and working about the next day, which should perhaps be a course of hope for the people of the region and the ability for us, as well as our neighbors, to live in security and peace.” Herzog added. “But first of all, we must get the hostages back.”

“I agree,” Biden said.

While in Washington, the president will also meet with Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is also acquainted with Trump, Herzog’s office said. chose He will serve as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations — along with Sen. Lindsey Graham, Trump’s longtime foreign policy adviser.

Biden hosted Herzog amid international concerns that Israel still has not facilitated the flow of sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The Biden administration last month gave Israel a 30-day deadline to “step up” food and emergency aid to the devastated region and warned that failure to resolve the issue could trigger U.S. laws requiring restrictions on military aid to Israel. The deadline to move forward is Tuesday.

A letter signed by various international aid organizations and published on Tuesday said Israel had failed to address concerns. “The situation is much more dire today than it was a month ago,” the groups wrote, according to a report by The Associated Press.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar downplayed the situation on Monday, telling reporters that “the issue will be resolved.”

Herzog’s visit comes as Trump’s transition operation is gaining momentum and shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced close contact with the president-elect.

Netanyahu stated this week that he has met with Trump three times since the November 5 elections and described the meetings as “very good and important talks designed to further strengthen the solid bond between Israel and the USA.”

Axios reported that Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a longtime close confidant of Netanyahu, also met with Trump on Sunday at the new president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Biden is expected to be at the forefront of his diplomacy in the Middle East in recent months as the Trump administration seeks an end to the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the release of dozens of hostages, including four Americans, taken by Palestinian militants. Trump’s first term saw US-Israeli rapprochement. The new president is expected to solidify American support for Netanyahu’s government and revive the “maximum pressure” approach towards Iran.

Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have portrayed Tehran as the “head of the octopus” that finances and directs attacks on their nation.

In talks with Trump this week, Netanyahu said: “We agree on all aspects of the Iranian threat and the dangers it poses.”
