Updated Look at WVU’s Future Non-Conference Schedules Highlighting New Opponents

A week ago, West Virginia Mountaineers He agreed to play with the Virginia Cavaliers in a pair of neutral-site games in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2026 and 2032. Additionally, athletic director Wren Baker announced WVU is adding another non-conference game against Robert Morris in 2029.

The non-conference schedule for West Virginia over the next three years is fully booked on paper, but that could change soon. The Mountaineers are scheduled to play home-and-home with Alabama in 2026 and 2027, identical to the two-year gap in the Backyard Brawl.

Baker has stated several times that he believes the Brawl should be played every year, and although Pitt recently brought on a new athletic director, they share the same sentiments about playing the game every year.

Below is an updated look at West Virginia’s future non-conference schedules, with the recent additions of the two Virginia games and the Robert Morris game added in 2029.

8/30 vs. Robert Morris

9/6 in Ohio

September 13, vs. Pitt

9/5 vs. Alabama

September 12 vs. UT Martin

September 19 vs. Virginia (Charlotte, NC)

9/4 in Alabama

September 11 and VMI

September 18 vs. Ohio

9/2 vs. Tennessee (Charlotte, NC)

9/1 vs Ohio

9/8 at Pitt

September 15 vs. Robert Morris

8/31 vs. St. Francis

9/7 vs Pitt

9/6 at Pitt

9/4 vs. Virginia (Charlotte, NC)

9/11 vs Pitt

2028 – Two slots opened.

2030 – A slot is opened.

2031 – Two slots opened.

2032 – A slot is open.

2033 and later – Three slots open.

As previously mentioned, WVU needs to find a way to get out of the house with Alabama and replace it with Pitt. The Panthers have room on their schedules in both 2026 and 2027 to make that happen, but they will likely need to adjust their current slate in 2026, which already includes two Power Four matchups with UCF and Wisconsin.

Playing at Alabama doesn’t mean much for West Virginia, especially now that Nick Saban is no longer the head coach there. You have to plan for success in non-conference games, and bringing in a blue blood who doesn’t actually have a track record is stupid.

In addition to filling the void with Pitt, I expect the Mountaineers to use one of the open spots on the FCS roster in 2028, 2031 and 2032. Wren Baker will do his best to stay away from scheduling two non-conference Power Four opponents; so expect the likes of Marshall to only be willing to show up for Morgantown, Old Dominion, Troy, or perhaps old familiar foes. UConn, Temple and South Florida.
