Jayhawks earn national and conference honors after blowout win over Iowa State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) – Three Jayhawks were recognized for their performance at the national and conference level. Great performances against then-No. 17 Iowa State on Saturday..

Senior cornerback Mello Dotson was named the Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week. This is his first career Big 12 weekly honors.

He recorded a solo tackle and a pass breakup against the Cyclones and capped the game with a pick-six in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

By choosing the six, Dotson extended his own school record by selecting the six. There are four now. This also tops all active FBS players.

Quarterback Jalon Daniels was named one of the Davey O’Brien Award’s Top 8 Quarterbacks and was listed as one of the Manning Award’s eight Stars of the Week.

Daniels led the Jayhawks to a 45-36 victory over the Cyclones, completing 12 of 24 passes for a season-high 295 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 68 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown on 12 carries.

Finally, running back Devin Neal was named the East-West Shrine Bowl Breakout Offensive Player of the Week.

En route to the win, Neal became the program’s all-time leading runner, surpassing June Henley’s record, which had stood since 1996. He also threw for the most rushing touchdowns in program history and recorded his 18th career 100-yard rushing game. He broke the biggest tie in program history with Tony Sands.

Neal currently has 3,951 career rushing yards, 43 rushing touchdowns and 46 total touchdowns.

The East-West Shrine Bowl is a best-in-class all-star event taking place on January 30, 2025 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Players will be coached by NFL coaches at an NFL facility and have the ultimate access to NFL-level resources, facilities, player-friendly programs and opportunities.
