RICHARD LITTLEJOHN: US millionaires flee ‘Trump terror’ for Starmer’s basket Britain must be crazy

Wealthy Americans, dismayed by Donald Trump’s landslide election victory, are reportedly fleeing to the UK.

According to Fortune magazine, which targets the super-rich, online searches for immigration to the UK have increased by 900 percent.

Ahead of last week’s election, high-profile hoodlums were racing to support Kamala Harris and oppose Trump’s ‘threat to democracy’. Many said they would leave the United States if he won.

Most of these are ‘stars’ I’ve never heard of. But they also include Cher, whose memoirs were published in the Mail, and Barbra Streisand, who said she would “probably move to England” if Trump won.

Real estate agents in London say there has been a marked increase in the number of applications from Americans interested in buying property.

Mail Online reports: ‘Marco Previero, director of relocation business R3Location, said London was a desirable location for wealthy Democrats who felt it was “more aligned with Democratic values” due to its left-leaning Labor Government.’

He claimed that Britain was seen as a ‘safe haven’ by Americans fleeing Trump’s terror. They are looking for homes worth between £2 million and £20 million.

Sotheby’s International Realty has U.S. clients flying to London on Thursday looking for a place to rent and wanting to enroll their children in local schools.

Forbes speculated: ‘Americans may also be attracted to the UK’s free hotspot healthcare system.’

I can only answer this: Are they crazy? Who in their right mind would willingly move from California to Camden Town in a moment of anger?

Trump may not be to their taste, but they would be much better off staying where they are. For starters, he promises to lower taxes.

Since Keir Starmala became Prime Minister, Britain has become a ‘hostile environment’ for the rich and the not-so-rich. Labor has launched a war on the wealthy, particularly wealthy foreign nationals.

Non-dom status, which exempted UK residents from paying tax on earnings earned abroad, has been abolished.

Private schools preferred by wealthy foreigners faced 20 percent VAT bills.

As for Americans tempted by the ‘free healthcare system at the point of access’, no one told them that the NHS, with seven million treatments and a backlog, was on the verge of permanent collapse – even when doctors were not on strike. Are GPs now warning they will have to cancel another two million appointments due to an increase in employers’ National Insurance?

The US healthcare system may be expensive and far from perfect, but I would rather get sick in America than spend 18 months in an NHS hospital corridor waiting to be thrown onto a tram. The treatment my late mother received in Michigan with a very modest insurance policy was amazing.

Look, I’m not trying to belittle Britain, but the outlook for the next few years under Labor is pretty bleak. In the USA, where I have been following the elections for the last few weeks, the expectations under the Trump administration are much more optimistic – at least in economic terms.

Yes, I have American friends who love the UK. But then they tend to be visitors who only see the best. Genghis Khan’s London, where the Trumpists are said to operate, is becoming increasingly dirty, crowded, ridiculously expensive and bogged down.

Honestly, I think the number of US citizens moving to London is wildly exaggerated by self-pitying Democrats and British real estate agents looking to make a quick buck.

They will certainly be much more numerous among the millionaires leaving the UK, many of whom head to the US.

My guess is that very few of these crying celebrities will leave the US when the going gets tough. Remember when our homegrown Leftist lovers threatened to leave Britain because of Brexit? None of them did so unless they landed a lucrative movie deal in Hollywood.

In any case, immigrating to the UK is not something Americans can do in one fell swoop. Not legally anyway. Even those with solid job offers have bureaucratic hurdles to overcome before a visa is granted.

So if any wealthy Americans are serious about moving to Britain permanently, there is a much easier way.

They must go to Calais, tear up their passports, give the people smugglers a handful of dollars and hop on the next boat across the Channel. Labor will welcome them with open arms.
