Crash caused by drunk driver caused pregnant woman to give birth urgently, police say

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) – Police say an Indiana woman accused of driving under the influence crashed into another car, causing serious injuries to a pregnant female passenger.

Police said witnesses told them they saw 28-year-old Cassandra Tokarski cross double yellow lines and run a stop sign to pass another vehicle before crashing into another car at an intersection in Evansville. Both people, including a pregnant passenger in the other vehicle, were taken to hospital. WFIE reports.

According to the information provided by the authorities who later went to the hospital, the pregnant woman urgently gave birth to her child and was told that the newborn was “sick”. They said they were told by hospital staff that the pregnant woman had hit the back of the front passenger seat violently during the crash.

Hospital officials said the baby had to be resuscitated at birth and is now in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Police officers who arrived at the scene said they smelled alcohol coming from Tokarski and saw alcoholic beverages in his vehicle. He was taken into custody after a sobriety test by police teams.

Police said they reviewed security footage from a nearby store that showed Tokarski entering the other vehicle’s lane of travel, resulting in the crash.

Tokarski was medically cleared of several charges, including operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. He is being held on $5,000 bail.
