Fast payments at N4 toll booths will be terminated

Road users are advised to keep an eye out for a significant change to toll booths on the N4 motorway.

We are approaching the end of 2024 and people all over South Africa are preparing to hit the road for the December holidays.

For those using the N4 motorway this holiday, it is important to note that there is a new change coming to the toll booths.

As of December 1, magstripe card payments at toll booths will be phased out.

The announcement was shared by: Trans African Concessions (Trac)which manages the N4 toll route.

The phase-out of Magstripe card payments will be implemented at toll plazas from the Solomon Mahlangu ramp in Tshwane, Gauteng to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.

According to Trac, toll booths on N4 will no longer accept magstripe (swipe) card payments from next month.

Drivers are advised to prepare for alternative payment methods including:

  • Contactless-enabled debit/credit cards (EMV) – EMV stands for Europay, Visa and Mastercard, the companies leading the development and adoption of this chip technology. In layman’s terms, ‘tap and pay’.
  • Smart devices (smartphones, smartwatches) connected to contactless payment applications (e.g. Apple Pay, Samsung Pay).
  • TRAC tags for fast, easy toll access.
