Editorial: Their sacrifices are more meaningful than ever this Memorial Day

It has been 106 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front, but the spirit of Remembrance Day has never been more important.

While bloody wars rage in the Middle East and Ukraine, with thousands dead and many more displaced and living in fear, Australia remains one of the safest countries in the world.

For this, we need to thank the brave men and women who serve our country, some of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

So we need to remember them today.

Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – the anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War – Australians are encouraged to observe a minute’s silence in honor of those who died or suffered in armed conflict.

Some will participate in the ceremonies, while others will pause for a quiet moment to reflect.

Halfway around the world, British railway worker David Wimberley will visit the grave of the only Australian digger at the historic Kingston cemetery in Portsmouth, in a particularly moving tribute.
