Weber County family lives for Utah-BYU rivalry

FARR WEST, Utah — The flag says it is outside the Patterson home in Farr West.

It’s a group divided by one of college football’s greatest rivalries.

“Go Utes!” shouted Aubrey Patterson.

“Go Cougs!” shouted Mason Patterson.

You could say that brothers Aubrey, 9, and Mason Patterson, 12, have bragging rights at stake when BYU and Utah renew their football rivalry.

Their clothing shows which team they support. And in years past – whether at a game or watching on TV – things could get a little heated.

“We really attack each other, especially when they’re both scoring goals left and right,” Mason said.

“We make fun of each other: ‘BYU will win!’ ‘No, Utah it is!’” Aubrey said.

Russell and Keri Patterson introduced their children to competition at a young age and dressed them in team uniforms.

“Toddlers, yes toddlers,” Keri said.

“Aubrey was two and Mason was five,” Russell said.

“I started doing this just to send family photos, and then it turned into something like, ‘I’m going to do this every year,'” Keri said.

Both Aubrey and Mason began to enjoy contests pitting the Cougars and Utes against each other on the field. But no matter which team comes out on top at the end of the day, they won’t let the score damage their relationship.

“Sometimes we may argue and fight, but then we calm down and have fun with each other,” Aubrey said.

“We still love each other. I mean, family is family,” Mason said.
