Multiple units from several law enforcement agencies chased a driver who refused to pull over during a traffic stop in Thurston County early Friday and stopped him with a high-speed pit maneuver.

Officers with the Yelm Police Department attempted to stop a car due to altered registration, according to a post from a Thurston County Sheriff’s Office sheriff’s office early Friday. When they signaled the driver to pull over, he refused and sped away. The driver passed quickly Nisqually Indian Tribe At speeds approaching 100 mph. The driver hit at least one other vehicle and continued to speed away from police.

Officers from the Nisqually Tribal Police joined the chase and nailed the tires of the driver’s car, causing two of the tires to fall off during the pursuit. However, the driver continued to drive away from the police. Traffic was heavier when the pursuit reached Lacey City. That’s when deputies from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office joined the chase and performed a high-speed PIT maneuver to stop the driver.

Deputies used the maneuver to prevent a more serious crash from occurring in the city and killing someone, according to the office. The maneuver caused the driver to crash into a tree.

The teams provided first aid to the driver until medical teams arrived at the scene. When paramedics arrived at the scene, the driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment and subsequently faced arrest.

When law enforcement searched the driver’s car, they found numerous weapons inside; police believed one of them was stolen from Lacey in 2013. When they walked around the crash scene, they found another gun that had been thrown from the car during the crash.

Following hospital treatment, the driver was issued a criminal record for multiple escape attempts, possession of a stolen weapon, first-degree driving, suspended and revoked license, and hit-and-run.
