Chicago Navy Pier shooting: Raylon East charged with killing former co-workers Lamont Johnson and Peter Jennings, police say

CHICAGO (Wales) — Saying the stakes were too great, a Cook County judge ruled that Raylon East should remain behind bars for what prosecutors called the cold-blooded and calculated murders of two former co-workers.

East is behind bars Saturday night, accused in the fatal shootings of two former co-workers at Navy Pier earlier this week.

The 36-year-old South Shore resident was charged in connection with first-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. November 5 murders.

East turned himself in a few days later and was arrested after authorities released photos of him on public transportation.

Investigators described East as a disgruntled employee who worked at the accommodation and catering company Levy Restaurants before being fired on Oct. 29.

The company said East had been reprimanded for numerous verbal and physical attacks on co-workers since he was hired more than a year ago.

In court, prosecutors said that after East was released weeks ago, he left his South Side home that morning wearing his cook’s uniform and used public transportation to get to Navy Pier.

That’s how he got the job, detectives said. Once inside, he walked into a private office area near the loading dock.

Prosecutors said he confronted former co-workers Lamont Johnson, 51, and Peter Jennings, 47, and shot them both in the head.

Other workers eventually found the victims, who later died at the hospital.

Meanwhile, authorities said that Doğu threw the gun he allegedly used in the murders into the lake and then escaped by taking public transportation. Chicago Police Department divers recovered the gun.

Investigators said the Kenwood High School graduate wore several layers of clothing to commit the murders.

Authorities released security and surveillance footage of a man they said was from the East discarding different clothing items at various times to avoid detection.

Police said East is a felon who was sentenced to eight years in prison for aggravated robbery.

He does not have a valid FOID card and is not a licensed storage-carrying license holder.

If convicted, Doğu could face life in prison. He will appear in court again next week.
