Two hunters shot on first day of firearm deer season in Minnesota – Twin Cities

CLAY COUNTY, Minn. — Clay County and Norman County sheriff’s departments are investigating separate hunting accidents on the opening day of firearms deer season in Minnesota.

Shortly before 8 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to a report of a male shot while hunting near the 4600 block of 90th Avenue North, a few miles southeast of Kragnes, Minnesota, in Clay County.

Deputies arrived to find a man with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head, according to a Clay County sheriff’s office news release. Clay County deputies and responding Minnesota state police immediately began administering first aid to the male hunter.

When asked whether the injuries were caused by the victim’s own hunting party or another hunter, Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting said more information would be released after the weekend.

Sanford Ambulance Service arrived and took over life-saving efforts. Sanford Airmed was called and its staff assisted Sanford Ambulance and law enforcement personnel in life-saving efforts.

The 34-year-old Dilworth man was transported to Sanford Hospital by Airmed. Empting told WDAY-TV there was no update on the man’s condition as of Saturday afternoon, but the injuries were serious.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing by the sheriff’s office.

Just before 11 a.m., deputies in Norman County were called to an area north of Perley for a 37-year-old hunter who had been shot.

The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Fargo, ND, to be treated for a single gunshot wound.

Norman County Sheriff Ben Fall stated that the wound was not life-threatening.

Fall said the incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office and no further information will be released at this time.
