London | The US election victory of climate skeptic Donald Trump has cast a shadow over this year’s COP summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, which was already threatened by entrenched global discord and widespread non-appearances of political and corporate leaders.

The big goal of the COP29 summit, which starts on Monday, is to reach an agreement among nearly 200 participating countries on how much money richer countries and investors should give to poorer countries to fight climate change. Demands of US$1 trillion ($1.5 trillion) or more annually are on the table.
