Here’s a college football story from the AP

Maryland coach Mike Locksley has confidence in his team, even on the long road trip to face the top-seeded Oregon Ducks.

He said the Terrapins could take advantage of the opportunity to play up to the level of their undefeated rivals on Saturday at Autzen Stadium.

“We still have a good football team. “I’m pretty confident that this team will show up and our voices will be heard,” Locksley said. “Oregon is one of those teams that has talent at all three phases, offense, defense and special teams. This team is immature at times, and as I like to say , is stupid enough to go against the opponent and play.”

Maryland (4-4, 1-4 Big Ten) bids bye A demoralizing 48-23 loss to Minnesota. The Terrapins have lost three of their last four games and are trying to reach bowl eligibility with four games remaining, including against Oregon.

The Ducks, meanwhile, were 9-0 and 6-0 in their first season in the Big Ten. Besides the top spot in the AP Top 25, Oregon also topped the first College Football Playoff rankings It was announced this week.

Locksley recognizes this challenge. Oregon is one of five undefeated teams in the country and one of four schools ranked in the top 15 in total offense and total defense.

“As I told them, we don’t have to play above our abilities because we have talent. Locksley said of his team: “We have skills that match. “But what we’ve got to do is play smart. We’ve got to go out and play together and then we’ve got to execute because that’s going to come down to execution in terms of players making plays and I know they’re going to play until the last second like we did. That’s what we’ve done in all our games.”

Oregon won’t have a big weapon against the Terrapins. Receiver Tez Johnson injured his shoulder with Ducks 38-17 win at Michigan last weekend. Johnson is the Ducks’ leading receiver with 649 yards and eight touchdown catches. He played just twice against the Wolverines.

The good news is that Johnson’s injury will not require surgery and will not be season-ending.

“I will tell you what I always tell you; We’ll get them out there when they’re ready to go. “We’re going to put player safety first,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “Thesis will definitely collapse in the near future, but I predict Thesis will return here soon.”

Growth of Traeshon

Receiver Traeshon Holden is among those who will aim to replace Johnson’s production. Holden stood out this season in the Ducks’ victory over Ohio State. He was kicked out for spitting on a Buckeyes player. Oregon struggled internally with its discipline, and Holden rebounded with his best performance of the season against the Wolverines with six catches for a career-high 149 yards.

“I want people to know that there is a before and an after. There’s growth,” Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel said of Holden.

Time Travelers

Maryland hasn’t played a regular season game in the Pacific time zone since visiting Cal in 2009. So this journey requires some adjustment.

“We are leaving a day earlier than we normally do to give us some time to adjust to the time zone differences. So we will go there on Thursday to practice and use Friday for meetings and acclimatization,” Locksley said.

Records are being broken

Gabriel needs just one more touchdown pass to match the NCAA career TD record of 178 total, held by Case Keenum. He also ranks second in NCAA history with 144 career passing touchdowns and 17,530 passing yards.

He completed 74.8% of his passes this season, the best in the country. He surpassed 19 goals and scored six more.

Those gaudy stats are fueling Heisman excitement among a group that includes Miami’s Cam Ward, Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty.
