Jaguars May Regret NFL Trade Deadline Decision

The Jacksonville Jaguars entered the NFL trade deadline with a 2-7 record, so almost everyone should have assumed they were selling.

It made perfect sense, right?

The Jaguars clearly weren’t good enough to make a tackle, as they were struggling on both sides of the ball and showed no signs of getting off the ball.

That’s why it should have been Jacksonville waved white flag and on November 5th I sold some parts.

Jaguars instead chose to standThey held on to some players, saying they absolutely had to deal them out. And now, with Trevor Lawrence injured, their bad decision looms even larger.

What was Jacksonville thinking? Maybe the Jaguars really thought they could make a playoff run. Or maybe they didn’t want to shake things up in the middle of the season.

Whatever the case, the Jaguars missed a golden opportunity to add some draft capital to help rebuild a clearly flawed roster.

Let’s be real here: The Jaguars’ 2022 run is looking more and more like a fluke. Remember: They were 2-6 before going 7-2 in their final nine games to win the AFC South division title.

Jacksonville then rallied from a 27-point deficit against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, and it became clear that Lawrence was coming.

Then last year the Jags lost five of their final six games, missing the postseason entirely and putting Lawrence’s future in question.

While no one thought the Jaguars would trade the former No. 1 overall pick, there was a legitimate debate about whether they should open their wallets for him. They did that by giving him a big contract extension, and that’s a good thing.

So shouldn’t Jacksonville prioritize its future instead of achieving the unrealistic goal of salvaging the 2024 campaign?

Now Mac Jones will be at center in Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings. That’s not exactly what the doctor ordered for the Jags.

The Jaguars had to know that this season was essentially a lost cause. The smart move would be to head to 2024 and start building a better future for Lawrence.

Jacksonville did not do this, and it is painfully obvious that this was the wrong decision.
