An altercation aboard the Auburn men’s basketball team’s flight may have led to a distraction, audio shows

Auburn, Ala. (WBRC) – WBRC has learned that a plane that appeared to be carrying the Auburn men’s basketball team to Houston was diverted due to an argument on the flight.

The flight changed direction just minutes after taking off just before 3 p.m., according to FlightAware.

WBRC was able to listen to air traffic control in the area just after 3 p.m. when a plane requested an emergency landing in Montgomery.

When asked what the threat level was, the pilot replied, “We have a group of basketball players fighting.”

Minutes later, air traffic control asked the pilot for the threat level once again.

“The flight deck is secure,” the pilot replied. “The threat level is under control for now, we just had the police on the scene and two of our players got into a physical fight and their clothes were torn.”

“This is a little crazy,” the pilot said a few minutes later.

For legal reasons we cannot share the audio with you at this time.

The plane returned to Auburn about 40 minutes after takeoff, according to FlightAware.

WBRC reached out to the Auburn University Athletics Team several times for more information but did not hear back. We also reached out to Auburn Police and Auburn Airport.

We will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
