The fight in the French Quarter turned into a gunfight, the woman was injured

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A fight in the French Quarter escalated into a shooting near several bars early Friday morning, according to NOPD.

A woman was shot around 1 a.m. in the 600 block of Iberville Street near Chartres Street, authorities said.

Less than 24 hours after arriving in New Orleans, the Weigold family from Boston witnessed the violence from their Airbnb balcony in Iberville.

In the video taken by the family on their mobile phone, a heated fight can be seen in the street below.

“We just see one guy jump,” Zachary Weigold said. “There are maybe eight men on him. One of them had a baton or a pipe in his hand.”

In the video, someone is seen using what looks like a pipe and hitting another person. A woman emerges from the nearby Ghost Bar with a chair and throws it at one of the people involved.

After he picked up the chair and threw it again, the gunfire opened and hit him. The footage suggests that the woman may have returned fire.

“I just see a barrel and hear a gunshot and me and my family run out onto the deck,” Weigold said. “My heart was beating a little fast. I was like, ‘Oh, this is happening, okay’.”

Weigold estimates he heard at least 10 gunshots. Surveillance footage from a nearby business shows police arriving within minutes to help the woman and secure the scene.

“I feel like the city is safe, but I also watch my back,” New Orleans resident Evelyn Crawford said. “I pay attention to my surroundings and know what to pay attention to. People need to trust their instincts if something goes wrong.

Despite the terrifying experience, the Weigolds are still enjoying their trip.

“We will enjoy our second day here. “Everything is going nice and smoothly, let’s keep it that way,” said Weigold.

Police are still searching for the suspect and have not released any further details publicly. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact NOPD or CrimeStoppers.
