NATO countries condemn “anti-Semitism” after Israeli football hooligans riot in Amsterdam

On the night between Wednesday and Thursday, Israeli football hooligans rioted in Amsterdam, destroying Palestinian flags, attacking Arabs and chanting anti-Gaza slogans. Some clashed with Amsterdam residents who were scheduled to protest against a match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax Amsterdam football clubs during the Gaza genocide. Five people were hospitalized and yesterday the Israeli Foreign Ministry said all Maccabi fans had been held accountable.

But Washington and European governments reacted with a deafening propaganda campaign, accusing those who clashed with hooligans of being “anti-Semitic.” Although no one is killed, Geert Wilders, the far-right leader of the Dutch government, demands police crackdown to stop a deadly “pogrom” against alleged Jews. As of yesterday, at least 62 people were detained in the wave of arrests throughout the city.

This propaganda campaign is a package of lies invented by governments that are complicit in Israel’s genocide by supporting it in Gaza. While they are outraged that five Israeli football hooligans were hospitalized with minor injuries, they support the mass murder of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

US President Joe Biden tweeted: “Anti-Semitic attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam are despicable and serve as a reminder of dark moments in history when Jews were persecuted. We are in contact with Israeli and Dutch officials and appreciate the commitment of Dutch officials to hold perpetrators accountable. Wherever it occurs, “We must fight anti-Semitism relentlessly.”

European governments made similar comments. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the clashes “intolerable” because they “attack us all” and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof called them “a terrible anti-Semitic attack”. French President Emmanuel Macron, who likened the conflict to the Holocaust, “unequivocally condemned” the violence, which he claimed reminded “the most terrible hours of history”. In the Netherlands, the press campaign is largely led by Wilders himself.

In a tweet, Wilders claimed “a pogrom on the streets of Amsterdam” and added: “Muslims with Palestinian flags are hunting Jews. I will not accept this. NEVER. Authorities will be held accountable for their failure to protect Israeli citizens. Never again.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity, said he viewed the “incident as extremely grave.” He demanded “strong and swift action” from Dutch authorities.
