Falmouth advances to Class B North final in third quarter

Top-seeded Falmouth scored five third-quarter touchdowns to break open a close game and pull away from fifth-seeded Messalonskee for a 51-7 victory in the Class B North semifinal Friday night in Falmouth.

The Navigators (9-0) quickly maintained their 16-7 halftime lead when Tres Walker threw a 43-yard TD pass to Ben Robbins. Walker then ran 32 yards for a score, Indi Backman scored her second touchdown of the game on a 16-yard run, and Owen Ross raced 61 yards for another touchdown.

Eli Bush capped the explosion when he blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone.

Falmouth took a 13-0 lead in the second quarter on a 56-yard run by Backman and a 37-yard run by Giovanni Guerrette.

Messalonskee (4-6) answered with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Tatum Doucette to Hayden Pierce. Falmouth’s Peter Kearns kicked a 27-yard field goal just before halftime.

THORNTON ACADEMY 36, SOUTH PORTLAND 12: Mauricio Sunderland rushed for four touchdowns, including a 62-yard burst in the fourth quarter that quelled South Portland’s comeback bid, and the top-seeded Trojans (8-2) defeated the No. -5) beat. South semi-final in Saco.

Thornton led Sunderland 21-0 at halftime after TD runs of 2, 10 and 5.

South Portland cut the deficit when Parker Reny threw a pair of touchdown passes of 11 yards to Addison Blais and 8 yards to Alex Horton to cut the deficit to 22-12 early in the fourth quarter. But the Trojans regained control when Sunderland broke free for their fourth TD and Connor Ayoob added a late 25-yard touchdown run for the defending state champions.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 60, SACOPEE VALLEY 14: Brady Plante returned the first kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, then added three scoring passes and a TD run as the top-seeded Seagulls (10-0) edged the third-seeded Hawks for their third straight eight-man Little South. achieved the championship. (5-5) at Old Orchard Beach.

Plante’s touchdown passes were 40 yards to Riley Provencher, 50 yards to Brayden Mansur, and 57 yards to Kooper Gervais. Provencher also had a 3-yard TD run and hit five 2-point conversions, helping the top-seeded Gulls take a 46-6 lead at halftime.

Sacopee Valley quarterback Tyler Easterbrooks scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter and Max Tripp had a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 48, YORK 0: Malik Sow rushed for three touchdowns, Ty Boone added two TD runs and the top-seeded Raiders (7-2) defeated the No. 4 Wildcats (3-6) in the Class C South semifinals in Fryeburg.

Sow scored from 20 and 5 yards to give Fryeburg a 14-0 lead after one quarter. Boone scored the next two touchdowns, Sow reached the end zone again to make it 35-0, and Ricardo Schulz returned and returned a 44-yard interception for a 42-0 halftime lead.

LEAVITT 27, CAPE ELIZABETH 20: Landon Daigle returned it 45 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter and the defending Class C champion Hornets (4-5) beat the second-seeded Capers (4-5) in the South semifinal in Cape Elizabeth.

No. 3 Leavitt will face No. 1 Fryeburg Academy in the district final.

Daigle had two interceptions and also kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Cape Elizabeth advanced to the Leavitt 14, but Nick Mellen passed on fourth-and-2 and the Hornets were able to run out the clock.

The Hornets took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 3-yard run by Keegan Reny. Daigle made an interception and caught a 25-yard TD pass from Brock Poulin to give the Hornets the lead.

Cape Elizabeth equalized by scoring two goals in the second quarter. Danny Gray scored on a 1-yard run with 6:32 left, then Eli Halter bounced a few times to score on a 10-yard run and Gray ran in the 2-point conversion.

Leavitt took back the lead with a 25-yard run in the third quarter. Cape Elizabeth answered with a 37-yard pass from Brady Inman to Eli Smith but missed the extra point.

MT. ARARAT 48, CAMDEN HILLS 12: Dash Farrell scored three rushing touchdowns and Nick Doughty added a pair of scores as the fourth-seeded Eagles (8-2) upset the top-seeded Windjammers (7-2) in an eight-man Big South semifinal in Rockland.

Hollis Schwalm connected with Isaac Dutile for a 54-yard passing touchdown in the first half for Camden Hills, and Braden Beveridge returned the kickoff 80 yards for a second-half score.

WELL 55, OAK HILL 14: Eli Potter rushed for three touchdowns, Dom Buxton and Nate DeMauro added two scores each and the top-seeded Warriors (9-0) edged the No. 5 Raiders (6-4) in the Class D South semifinals in Wells.

Dom Carbonneau opened the scoring with a 9-yard run. Buxton’s 14-yard run made it 14-0 after one quarter, then Potter reached the end zone twice in the second quarter and Buxton got his second TD.

Kaiden Delano scored on a 13-yard run for Oak Hill after DeMauro and Potter made it 48-0 in the third quarter. Delano also had a 17-yard run for the final TD of the game.
