16-year-old found unresponsive at Platte Valley Youth Services died at a Denver hospital

A 16-year-old boy found unresponsive at Platte Valley Youth Services in Greeley late last month died at a Denver-area hospital this week, according to Greeley police.

The man died on Tuesday and an active investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said Friday.

The child was found unconscious in his room at 6:48 a.m. on Oct. 21, and facility staff called 911. Emergency personnel took the child to the hospital.

Platte Valley staff called Greeley police for assistance and investigation approximately four hours later due to the severity of the child’s medical condition.

Detectives from the Greeley Police Investigations Unit then responded to the center. Police said they were investigating a suspected contraband drug found on the premises.

The Greeley Police Department is the police agency that investigates new criminal activity in the downtown area.

The center is a 68-bed mixed multi-use youth center operated by the Youth Services Division of the Colorado Department of Human Services, according to its website. The center provides detention facilities for children between the ages of 10 and 17. It serves clients from five jurisdictions, including the 8th, 13th, 17th, 19th and 20th, spanning 12 Colorado counties.

Police said no additional information would be released regarding the incident.
