Driver Faces Murder Charges After Fatal Hit and Run: Prosecutors

A New Jersey driver is facing murder charges after allegedly hitting a woman he knew with his car and leaving her to die on the side of the road, authorities said.

On Monday, October 21, 22-year-old Breanna Rowley of Vineland allegedly struck 21-year-old Caroline Bump “at a high rate of speed” with a 2003 Infinity model while Bump was stopped in the roadway, at the Cumberland County Office in Millville. The prosecutor said in a statement:

In the prosecutor’s statement, it was stated that the review of security cameras in the neighborhood showed that the woman was shot at 23.11.

The prosecutor’s office said, “The state claims that the parties knew each other and were together before the criminal act that caused the death of the victim.”

After allegedly striking Bump, Rowley fled the area, leaving the victim “severely injured and/or dead without rendering or otherwise calling for assistance,” the prosecution said.

Two hours later, at 1.39am on Tuesday, October 22, a passing motorist found Bump dead on the side of the road “as a result of a high-speed collision and resulting injuries”, the prosecutor’s office said.

Prosecutors alleged Rowley took steps after the incident to conceal the damage to his car and his involvement in the incident.

After the incident, the police started looking for the driver of the car.

He was initially charged in Salem County on Oct. 25 with obstructing the administration of law, hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence.

The prosecutor’s office charged him with other crimes, including murder, on November 7.

Rowley is being held in the Salem County Jail pending a detention hearing. It’s unclear whether he has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
