Pipe bombs found in Northern Michigan thrift store donation

Police said they found pipe bombs in a donation box at a thrift store in northern Michigan this week.

Michigan State Police said police were called to the New Beginnings Resale Store in Harbor Springs around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday after a worker made the discovery. A post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The thrift store is affiliated with a Catholic parish in Harbor Springs, north of Traverse City and Petoskey, according to its website.

Police said a worker retrieved a donated box containing several tools. They moved items around to see what else might be inside the box and found what they believed to be pipe bombs.

Another had only one fuse in it, Carroll said.

Michigan State Police Specialist Lt. Derrick Carroll said four of these mechanisms were found.

The MSP Bomb Squad took an X-ray and found a fuse and gunpowder inside one. They made it safe and destroyed it.

The MSP Canine Unit searched the business and the surrounding area without finding any other explosive devices.

As of noon Friday, no arrests had been made and the investigation was ongoing, Carroll said.

He issued a reminder in the middle of the incident: Anyone suspected of having a pipe bomb should not touch it and call the police.
