2 killed in fiery crash that caused tree to fall blocking I-64 west in New Kent

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. — Two people died in a crash that closed Interstate 64 west in New Kent County Thursday morning.

VDOT officials said the interstate was closed near Route 33 (mile marker 206) due to a crash.

The vehicle crashed into a tree and then caught fire around 11 a.m., state police said. The tree then fell across the westbound lanes and portions of the eastbound lanes of the interstate.

As a result, the eastbound left lane and shoulder were closed, as were all westbound lanes.

Traffic was being diverted from the interstate at exit 211 of Route 106.

“Motorists should seek alternative routes to avoid delays,” VDOT officials said. he said.

Traffic was backed up for approximately 5.5 miles as of 11:55 a.m., according to VDOT.

Troops are in the process of identifying the victims and notifying their relatives, officials said.
