ALABASTER, Ala. (WBRC) – Election day was just a few days ago, but the Alabaster City Council is already looking into problems that could be avoided in the next election.

Alabaster Police Department said: limited parking It created traffic and congestion at the Kingwood polling place.

Mayor Scott Brakefield told WBRC some people waited up to two and a half hours to vote.

He wanted to clarify that the city does not designate polling places for state or federal elections, but they did hold a meeting Thursday night to discuss issues voters are having.

These traffic dilemmas can now be referred to the Shelby County Commission.

But the city is responsible for municipal elections next summer, in which residents will elect the mayor and council members.

This event was once held in the Restore building next to the First United Methodist Church of Alabaster, but the city school system purchased it.

City leaders appear open to continuing to use the building; Since this is a training ground, they are just trying to figure out the logistics. For example, they can divide the building into wards.

The mayor said improving the election process cannot replace the hard work of volunteers.

“I voted in Kingwood and I can’t say enough good things about the poll workers there and the Kingwood Church staff,” Mayor Scott Brakefield said. “They did an incredible job with the intensity of people. “Just the flow and how much volume was in one place, we just want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to prevent that from happening.”

The mayor added that he doesn’t want anyone to be discouraged from voting in the midterm elections or the 2028 election, so the issue is being addressed.
