Merson criticizes Man Utd player for lack of ‘identity’ when making Leicester prediction

Paul Merson thinks Ruben Amorim would be better off joining Chelsea rather than Man Utd as he makes his prediction for the Red Devils’ game against Leicester City on Sunday.

Amorim will start operating on: Man Utd On 11 November, after taking charge of Sporting Lisbon’s final match against Braga at the weekend.

There are doubts about how the Red Devils’ squad will fit into his formation, given that Amorim will likely use a 3-4-3 and certainly a back three.

Merson feels the current Chelsea squad would be better suited to make the most of Amorim’s tactics, with Man Utd needing to invest in players to give the Portuguese coach what he wants.

The Arsenal legend also questioned the “identity” of summer signing Joshua Zirkzee and made a prediction for Sunday’s Man Utd v Leicester City game.

Merson said Sport Keeda: “I watch Manchester United and I really think Ruben Amorim is cut short at Old Trafford. You could probably say it’s advantageous because we’re not expecting too much. But I watch all the other big teams and they all have a plan, Manchester United don’t.” .

“When you look at the system Amorim has in place at Sporting and you look at United, you don’t really know how many players can achieve that at Old Trafford. He doesn’t tick any boxes. Who will be the back three, given that he is not the quickest of all the centre-backs available? And what about the wing-backs? They don’t have a decent goal-scoring number 9 like Viktor Gyokeres or two creative number 10s.

“If Amorim goes to Chelsea, for example, you know he has the resources to succeed. Fast defenders like Reece James, Malo Gusto. Two good number 10s in the form of Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku. Nicolas Jackson has already shown that he can be successful if the right supply is provided. Unlike the situation at Old Trafford, the resources are available.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love Amorim and what they’ve done in Portugal deserves great praise. But it looks like a real challenge for him and he won’t be an overnight success at Old Trafford because he needs players for his preferred system.

“I also wanted to talk about Joshua Zirkzee. I don’t know where he plays or what his actor identity is. If you’re always behind the eight ball at Manchester United, it’s difficult for you as a player. Mason Mount, Anderson and many other players also suffered from this.

“Leicester did well to save a point against Ipswich last weekend. A defeat in this game would have been disastrous for them. Jamie Vardy needs to stay fit throughout the season to avoid relegation. I think there is only one winner in this game and that is not Leicester .Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Leicester City”
