French fire breaks out in Angeles National Forest

Summary:

A brush fire dubbed the French Fire broke out in the Angeles National Forest on Thursday and quickly burned 94 acres, officials said.

Why is it important: The fire was 20% contained on Thursday and progress was halted. No injuries or damaged structures were reported.

Why now: Celeste Morales, public information officer for the Angeles National Forest, told LAist that the weather is a major concern due to red flag warnings and Santa Ana winds.

Firefighters will likely be working through the night,” he said. “We’re still at 10% containment and you never know until we get to 100%, so firefighters will continue to work towards that.”

Background: The Frenchman Fire broke out at Frenchman Flat near Pyramid Lake shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday.

Closed roads: Golden State Highway by California Highway Patrol.

“This is not only for public safety, but also for the safety of firefighters as they get in and out,” Morales said.

Who is at the scene: More than 200 personnel are working on the fire, including from the Angeles National Forest and the Los Angeles Fire Department.
