Vice President Kamala Harris accepted 2024 election with Donald Trump Wednesday afternoon. Speaking from her alma mater, Howard University, Harris addressed her young supporters directly, urging them to stay positive and “keep fighting” for “the extraordinary promise of the United States of America.”

Harris, whose defeat devastated millions of people determined to close the page on Trump, said her “heart is full today; full of gratitude for your trust in me, full of love for our country, and full of determination.” Acknowledging that “the outcome of this election is not what we wanted, what we fought for, what we voted for,” he asked his supporters to “hear me when I say: The light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as it endures.” As long as we keep fighting, we will never give up.”

Harris said she knew “people are feeling and experiencing a variety of emotions right now,” but emphasized that “we must accept the results of this election.” That’s not the case for the losing candidate in 2020. The Vice President said he “spoke with President-Elect Trump” and told him “we will assist him and his team in their transition and engage in a peaceful transfer of power” because “a fundamental tenet of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the consequences” and “anyone who seeks the public’s trust “He should respect that.”
