LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – An internal investigation is ongoing after a 53-year-old woman died while in custody at the Louisville Metro Correctional Institution Wednesday afternoon, according to a statement.

Officers found the woman unresponsive and in medical distress around 4:30 p.m., authorities said.

Officers and medical personnel began life-saving measures until EMS arrived. According to the statement, EMS was unable to resuscitate the woman and pronounced her dead at 5:30 p.m.

Metro Corrections Professional Standards Unit opened an internal investigation as standard procedure. The Louisville Metro Police Public Integrity Unit also opened an investigation, according to authorities.

Mental health services were provided to others in custody who may have been affected by this death, and the Metro Correctional Facility Peer Support Team was activated for all staff.

More details will be released after the coroner notifies relatives, officials said.
