An ordinance passed in a New Jersey town on Election Day 2024 could have people toasting.

Haddon Heights voters have a simple yes/no question on their minds about legalizing the sale of alcohol in a Camden County municipality for the first time in more than a century.

“Should the Borough of Haddon Heights amend its Ordinances to allow General Retail Consumption Liquor Licenses that allow the licensee to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on and off the premises?” reads the question asked on the ballot to voters The town has a population of approximately 7,500.

According to “unofficial results”, the ballot question passed on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, with 2,176 yes and 1,351 no votes. Shared by Camden County.

Mayor Zachary Houck had not yet responded to NBC10 Philadelphia’s request for comment Wednesday.

Houck towards Election Day noted on NJ.com He said there are no specific laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol in the town, which has no bars or liquor stores, but there is no law allowing the sale of alcohol.

Houck supports the measure that would allow the liquor to flow.

“This town has been dry for 120 years” Houck told NJ Advance Media last week. Adoption of the regulation “will benefit society.”

A county spokesperson told NBC10 that several things had to happen before alcohol could be legally served in the previously dry town. The ordinance could be brought up at Wednesday night’s town meeting.
