$30 million: Iconic London Lakes fly fishing area is up for sale

One of the world’s most famous fly fishing destinations has been put up for sale for the second time in more than 50 years, and its price is expected to exceed $30 million.

Spanning over 2,000 hectares in Tasmania’s Central Highlands, the London Lakes estate has three lakes: Big Jim Lake, Samuel Lake and Benjamin Lake.

It also contains substantial bed and breakfast and farmhouse accommodation.

The property was converted into a private fly fishery in the 1970s by Jason and Barbara Garrett and has since gained a reputation as one of the best in the world.

There are brown, rainbow and tiger trout species in the fishery.

In 2003, a group of families from Sydney bought the property and have made many changes since then, including widening the mountain stream connecting the two largest lakes and starting a restocking program with wild trout.

The fishery holds a unique mix of brown, rainbow and tiger trout and is known for challenging fishing experiences.

Knight Frank representative Jason Oster said the sale represented a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to purchase an iconic property.

“A prominent fly fishing destination, London Lakes has hosted both national and international fly fishing championships and is known worldwide for its hard fishing and fish in exceptional condition,” he said.

“This protected area of Tasmania offers the seclusion and security of one of the world’s most untouched and remote natural environments.”

Elders agent Sam Woolcock, who is also representing the property, said there had been significant interest from both local, interstate and overseas buyers.

“We have also noticed an increase in demand from buyers looking for cooler, less variable climates,” he said.
